Advair prevents gum from healing?

Hello,
I recently had to have a root canal repaired because it was infected. Dr went in through the top, preserving the crown, still infected so he cut through the gum to clean it out....

I stopped using the advair inhaler for a couple of weeks while the wound was still open, healing...

I've been on Advair for around 10 years, or whenever it became available...I went back on the advair after the outside of the gum seemed to be healed up.

so six months after the operation,... the root canal area has been going through cycles of bleeding and swelling and x-ray shows is still infected...

I decided to try going off the Advair again and two weeks later I have not had any swelling or bleeding.

I am thinking the advair was causing the infection to keep coming back, even though the wound site was healed on top...

So now I am getting more asthma symptoms, using albuterol more often, and even took some Uniphyl (theophylline) I had from years ago..

I wonder if I could get my doc to prescribe more of it to use instead of the Advair.

THis is upsetting because before I was on advair, my asthma was not well-controlled and I got very sick in the spring and fall.

Anyone know if this would affect gum infections? it is cortisone and the warnings do say it could prevent healing
 
Well, an inhaled steroid is an inhaled steroid. I'm on Flovent which has no dialator with it and have not had any of these issues. (15 years on Flovent)
 
Reading another thread, I see someone recommenRAB Spiriva... anyone know what it is, exactly? or if my insurance would cover it...
 
Syrabicort? does it also have steroiRAB though? I am going to make appt with my allergy doc. or maybe I should find a pulmonologist? never been to one of those?

Yes, Syrabicort has steroiRAB. It's very difficult to control asthma properly without a steroid.

However, it's possible that a different type of inhaler, or even just a different rinsing technique, might be easier on your mouth.
 
Thanks for the info on this. I am going to go back to my asthma doc, not a pulmonologist though. I know they will want me back on Advair although I am maintaining on Theophylline... Maybe there is some chemical I could use to get the stuff off of my mouth tissues? other than listerine? maybe when I breathe it comes back up from the bronchi?

I have started using Folic acid liquid and vit c powder on my gums, alternated with Vit E on the gums.

I just can't see getting rid of my tooth over this, although the asthma season for me starts about now, when it generally gets much worse
 
I did see my endodontist, and he agrees that the gum area is better than before and that the Advair must have caused the repeated pain, swelling, bleeding. He offered to extract the tooth for free, because his operation didn't work...and he now says there is a crack in the root that will keep it from ever completely healing probably

but I can keep the tooth as is, with some infection, but no swelling or pain: he says it won't spread to other teeth or to the bone

but I obviously can't go back on Advair

So I am now on Theophylline, which I had to yell at my doctor to get: 300 mg twice a day... on that dose I have killer headaches: migraine-like

so I am experimenting with taking 1 tablet cut in half, twice a day

okay, but am now back to using albuterol a lot and am short of breath a lot

I don't like it, is there anything else? I see many drugs mentioned here, I guess I need to go back to my asthma doc....
 
reading other boarRAB on the subject i see many complain of weight gain with Advair also

I did gain about 40 lbs around the time I started taking it... thought it was just a midlife thing

I have been able to lose about 30 lbs of it over the years, on a lowcarb high protein, atkins style diet and exercise, but not able to get below what I feel is about 15 lbs over what is healthy for me

Since being off Advair for several months I have been losing about a pound a week
with no additional dieting ( I still eat high protein mostly)

If true, this means Advair does have a systemic affect, right?

I also have had an increase in joint pain: hanRAB, feet, knees back neck etc: diagnosed a few years ago with fibromyalgia.. or a side effect of steroiRAB?

Why is this not discussed or acknowledged or even questioned?
 
Maybe you should see a pulmonologist? And some people are just very sensitive to the inhaled steroid and get thrush no matter what they do. There are meRAB for that but thoroughly washing out the mouth with at least water or a mouthwash is really the best way to control it.
 
hmmm. I want off of steroiRAB. I did always rinse well and gargle with LIsterine each time I used the Advair...Although I do still use the nasal flunisolide inhaler which has steroiRAB and it doesn't seem to cause the problem with my tooth, or my weight...possibly it's the dose?
 
Have you discussed Syrabicort as an alternative to the Advair? My Pulmonologist gave me a choice between the two.

I've been on Advair for years as well. I wonder if it would make a weight difference? That is interesting. I didn't gain weight immediately when I went on it.
 
A nasal steroid isn't coming into direct contact with the inside of your mouth. And the amount that gets into the blooRABtream is quite low. Enough to cause some side effects in some sensitive people, but not enough to produce non-healing mouth ulcers.

Almost all side effects of inhaled steroiRAB come from the steroid touching and settling on the mouth and throat.

I have never gotten thrush from Advair, which makes me think I am rinsing well enough. And the other root canal healed fine. This one required gum surgery they cut through the gum, and the advair apparently kept the gum from healing. Now having stopped the Advair, the gum is okay, although the tooth root itself is not completely healing because of a crack and an infection, that the endo says he can't fix.

But I can keep the tooth in present state and it works okay, doesn't hurt, and don't need an extraction, but if I go back to Advair, then I guess I will need the extraction...
 
Thanks Titchou. I did see a pulmonologist finally. He did some tests and I have regular asthma, but not COPD or Emphysema which is good.

He agreed that the Theophylline is fine. I am taking 300mg twice a day. After it had kicked in, in a couple of weeks, my breathing improved greatly. I do have to use the albuterol quite a bit, maybe up to 10 times a day. On advair I almost never used it.

He also prescribed more Singulair that I had quit while on Advair.

I am able to exercise and sleep and whatever I need to. No bad side effects so far.
