I have not seen this movie, but film critic David Edelstein (New York magazine) lists "Mother and Child", about a mother who gave her daughter up for adoption, as one of his "Top Ten" for 2010.
His comments:
"It's easy to see why Rodrigo Garcia's film was overlooked: It's too damn painful".
I think this is why we don't usually see adoption portrayed realistically, it's just (as experienced by those who lost in adoption anyway) too painful.
Adoption is a downer.
