Adoption portrayed realistically--too 'painful'?

I have not seen this movie, but film critic David Edelstein (New York magazine) lists "Mother and Child", about a mother who gave her daughter up for adoption, as one of his "Top Ten" for 2010.

His comments:

"It's easy to see why Rodrigo Garcia's film was overlooked: It's too damn painful".

I think this is why we don't usually see adoption portrayed realistically, it's just (as experienced by those who lost in adoption anyway) too painful.

Adoption is a downer.

Do you agree?
