Adobe Flash Player won't work on my mac?

There's no problem downloading the thing, but then a window pops up with the Adobe Flash Player Icon... We click on it to finish the process, but it closes before it opens (if that makes any sense... Something appears on the toolbar, but only for a second). We have a Mac OS X, version 10.4.11.
Any help would be appreciated!
