Added 1700mah battery to T3

Hi fellas.
Don't have to much time to be around lately (exams) but this issue was important to me.
Anyway, I've made dosen different chargers for palms, 3 of them for T3 alone. All they are of course good and saved me million times, but they are bulky, and sometimes i forget them, or forget to recharge them. Usually this happends when i need to record important lecture. my T3 can only record 1.5 hours on it's own battery - very sad.
There is also no large enough battery that you can fit instead of T3's - 30-40 % woudn't be enough for me
So i got myself a new Idea - to add second battery in between the T3 and Hard metal case, which i never take off.
So i found the battery that fits my need - a battery for an Ipod - it is very wide and toll, but it's only 3.5mm thick. So i ordered the battery for about 15$ off Ebay, here it is:

Here it is in comparison with T3's own battery:

I had to remove built-in protection circuit from Ipod battery - since it's already in T3 and i don't need another.

Than i soldered thin wires to the battery. Soldering the battery must be done with very well-heated soldering iron for a very short mement - so don't let the battery to heat up.

Next taks was to find out how to transfer 2 wires inside T3. Since i didn't want to drill holes inside T3 case - i used one of the holes on the back that - those are used to hold flip cover. I alredy had wires leading to T3's battery appartment and even a specific connector that i finally don't need anymore. I used to plug auxiliary batteries through this connector.

To gain maximum space i removed the black soft plastic from interior of T3's hard case - to fit the Ipod battery there:

If i simply put T3 on top of the battery as is - it will make trouble closing/opening slider, so i used thick double-sided tape in the area that doesn't move - so the the rest of the back that is attached to the slider would be raised above battery and would enable for slider to move freely.

Soldering wires was pretty difficult - because they must be shrt, and i had to avoid shortening them (short circuit)

This is how wires look inside T3 - the are glude to the plastic carcas and lead to battery compartment.

Since i had to connect two batteries in parallel - i disassembled the T3's battery, took out the protection circuit, and soldered ipod battery to it's input.

That's about all i had to do. This is how everything looks assembled, I had to remove most of the black soft plastic, but there is no pressure on between T3 and battery, and close closes easily, as before.

Well, an obvious problem arises: the reset hole is completely covered. The only way to reach it - is to drill hole inside the battery -:).
I rely on the fact that have very few resets - about 1-2 per month. It's quite some time since i used to install 20 programs a day. All my soft is working properly, and very few changes are made. But just in case i installed a CrashPro - so it will reset by itself , when stuck. I didn't tested it - but i hope it works, It better be, otherwise i will have to wait really looong time till battery(ies) empty.

REsults:
I have tested my T3 in different conditions 3 weeks ago, when i added Second battery (similair procedure) to friend's TE, you can see it here:

Finally pics are UP. I really hope that pics will hold up for couple of days ( those free hosts are terrible)
Testing condition:
spu speed: standard,400mhz, Screen - always ON, brightness: medium. pocket tunes is playing Mp3 track in loop, volume : minimum.
So in these conditions my T3 (before) could last from 120 to 130 minutes. I guess most your T3's are in a little bit better shape. Because my T3 was 1 year when i bought it from second hand 1/2 year ago, and i use it very frequently.
Aniway, after the procecure battery lasted in same condition first time for 6.5 hours, second time for 7.5 hours. So far - so good. Testing more.

As an avid reader of your posts on rabroad I want to welcome you WHOLEHEARTEDLY to this forum -- you will be a terrific addition and I think impressed by some of the "types" we've got lurking around here!

Now we're cookin . . . between junglemike and IIIcRules we'll be video WHIZKIDS by the end of the week.

Cheers . . . and since I'm not opposed to "drastic measures," I like the 1700m/a idea. Where's that chainsaw . . . .

This battery idea is interesting. After reading your post, I actually visited a web site that sells batteries for PDAs and mobile phones. It appears almost all of them are 3.7V. It's too bad we can't fit the Dell Axim X5 battery inside a T3. It has a whopping 3200 mAh, compared with the 900mAh on the standard T3 battery. I was also wondering if it would be possible to fit a smaller battery inside the slider or somehow make an iPaq's external battery pack mount onto the backside of the T3.

:) Thanks Paul for such a nice welcome.
Best wishes to you too.

You mean scratches at the back of T3? - that doesn't matter too much since my T3 is always in it's case, and i'm not going to sell it . (By the way, would anybody buy such a T3? :D ;) :p )
If you would see my previous Zire71 - (can't show you - pics are dead) - you would know that Pda's owned by me have seen really much worse times. Same thing applies for my Palm VX. So my T3 has to consider itself very lucky - at least it looks like it's brothers, which you can't say for my Z71 :D

You assumptions are right - you can attack to T3 really *Any* li-ion/li-poly battery from any device, and having any capacity. They all are rated 3.7v (sometimes 3.6 - but it's same).
The only problem is how to connect it and how to attack it physically. Before that i used 2 huge battery packs to attack (by nagnet) to T3. They are 9000mah totat - 10 times of T3's capacity.
If you know to solder a little bit - it's only a question whther you are ready to secrifice some bulkiness of attached batt and (maybe) outer look (which isn't factor for me)

What dod you mean by "inside the slider?"

My T5 battery lasts a very long time, but I still would like more.

I don't want to cut into the case, just want an external battery to plug into the power port on my T5. Is someone makeing such an item.

Really liked the power sled for my T3, of course thats not compatible with the T5.

Any ideas on adapting the T3 powersled to the T5??

Thanks,
Jim

I appreciate your innovativeness. I am not that technically inclined when it comes to actualy taking things apart. Because of this, I am glad that when I had a T3 I just opted for alternative sources of power for my T3 - power back up, battery pack, etc.
For geeks like me I suppose there will always be products I can buy that will make up for my lack of technical inclination.

Ok, I've absorbed all the pics and I'd do it . . . but then I love "breaking the rules," especially with P1.

"You can't take things out of ROM or you'll void your warranty!!!"

Yeah, right.

I saved, renumbered and zipped the photos above, and was all excited about posting them in a package with a text copy of JM's post, but the limit of 100k is far exceeded.

Anyone wanting them in a collected and organized zip, email or PM me with YOUR EMAIL (over the next week or so) and I'll whiz them off. After that they'll be off my PC.

I don't have the "constant on" use that junglemike does - but if my battery starts to "fail," I'll definitely do it. My only question is, why cant you dump the T3 Battery altogether and use 2 of these - or is there only enough clearance for the wider unit by resting it on the old one?

Now if we can just get JM to work on DIGITIZERS after the exams are over . . . . . possibly a Linux OS if he's not too busy . . . !!!
