Adam and Eve were not married so how could they have sex?

No rites needed. Abraham and Sarah didn't have a rite. Neither did Boaz and Ruth.

Back in Old Testament times, the act of sex *was* the marriage rite. That means if a man had sex with a woman, he was legally and morally married to her.

Nuptials, as rites, didn't come along until much later in the Church.

God created Eve for Adam, gave her to him, and him to her.

That event was the original institution of marriage, by God himself.

In what sense were they not married? They were literally made for each other.

Besides, you seem to miss the whole point of the story. They were sinners. Their sin brought all the misery into the world. Did you somehow have the idea that they were without sin or being held up as example for the rest of us to follow?

As for hell, it seems that both repented and tried to follow God afterwords. We cannot know the disposition of their souls, though.
