okay, I am thinking about buying a 1990 acura legend. it has only 20,000 on it. with that being said, my mechanic told me that it should get a new timing belt. He told me that the belt would cost a total of $1,200. To me, this seems rather high. I was wondering if this would be an accurate price or not. Any input would be very helpful.

That engine is not scheduled for a timing belt until 75,000 miles. He is trying to screw you. Depending on where you are at that price is a bit high unless you are in LA or new york.

That's a reasonable price. You basically have to pull the whole motor to get to the timing belt. Also, while in there he should also replace the water pump and belt tensioner. The price he's giving you should include all the above. That is a 19 year old car and probably needs a whole lot more than just a timing belt. I would think twice about buying it.
