Activating a used verizon cell phone?

I would simply like to activate an old verizon phone because I broke mine today.

The dialing *228 method isn't working, I can't use the online or call up the verizon people so late.

Any other ways? Is there a new number to dial that does it without having to sit there and talk to someone?
