Acid Reflux (Regurgitation)

I found out I had Acid Reflux four months ago. Apparently I had it for a very long time. I have had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. They also showed I had a Hiatal Hernia and my esophagus had norrowed. My ecophagus was enlarged during the endoscopy.

I have been taking Aciphex and Prevacid for three months. My doctor says that the acid blockers are working. I have evlevated my bed, changed my diet and have gone to a nutritionist.

The problem is I am still experiencing the regurgitation. I feel the flowing in my chest and esophagus, feel stuff in my throat, have hoarsness, cough and a very bad taste.

What is done for the regurgitation problem?

None of my doctors are really dealing with this. I know the acid blockers don't hlep this problem. They only thing my doctor has done is to tell me to walk after I eat.

Meteclopramide can help - it is a "prokinetic" - it encourages movement down the GI tract away from your oesophagus, it also tightens the oesophegal sphincter.

It has been around for many years, is cheap and safe. It might be worth asking your doctor about it, maybe asking about a 1 week trial of it? A lot of doctors think of it mainly as a drug for nausea, but it is quite effective for reflux

Gaviscon can also help - it makes a gelitinous raft that floats on top of the stomach contense, stopping it from flowing back into the oesophegus. It is avaliable without prescription.

Hope these two thoughts help

Try not eating as much. Stop eating at the first second you feel full. Also, I had to cut things that are hard to digest out of my diet like lettuce and cabbage. I was diagnosed with GERD 5 years ago and still sometimes have painful regurgitation (YUCK). Anything that is hard to digest, I will get little pieces of it in the back of my throat. Tuna fish out of the can is one, lettuce-big time, no cabbage and some fruit skins like apples, pears and grapes. Try that and see if it helps.

I have the problem with regurgitation too, albeit making every change in the book and trying numerous ppi's it won't stop. My esophagus is sore 24/7. This is ridiculous and absolutely frustarting that the drs don't know what to do with us after ppi therapy fails.

Hello Hoz - in 06 my pcp wanted to rule out any G I bleeRAB for my severe anemia *which was due to some whoppers of uterine fibroiRAB. So onto the gastro I go. My Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (wow) with biopsy and CLOtest revealed :
A. Distal esophagus biopsy-
1. Reflux esophagitis
2. No Glandular Epithelium or intestinal metaplasia seen.
AND:
B. Antrum, biopsy-
1. Mild chronic inactive gastritis
2. No helicobacter pylori identified.

C. Small intestine biopsy -
Duodenal mucosa without villous blunting or increased inflammation.

I guess its safe to assume no reason for anemia found here?
Reflux esophagitis? She - the gastro doc - handed me a xerox copy of some diet - no salty, no peppery, no spicey and a bunch of nexiums.
What about the anemia, ma'am? Back to PcP. No mention of reflux or any concern. I have no burning. I have no symptoms. I don't know really what to do. I don't want to take Nexium. Told PCP this and was told to keep taking iron supplement and sent on my merry little way. Oh. Ok. (I was also given a colonoscopy by above gastro and found nothing to cause anemia, as well.) Then referred back to gyne doc.

I don't mean to spew my personal disdain toward the medical professionals but I can't help myself. I have gone round and round and round. Is this something we should keep notes on? Should I remind my NEW pcp that things should be re-checked? .
Is there something new on the horizon? Wait. I have NO symptoms. I sleep with head elevated and follow a very organic - as gluten free and raw as possible diet with emphasis on veggies/fish/lean meat and awesome waters.Fine. I'll just google and find a forum. Thanks, doc. (see? personal disdain to medicos).

For those WITH symptoms? - keep after them (the professionals). Go to a new one. Drag your files all over town until you get RESULTS. I feel for you Hoz. I keep a full file of all my medical information and am going thru things now to re-check. Reflux is last on my list for now since I don't have symptoms - but it can be serious and it can be painful.
Right now I am dealing with a quite possibly HUGE Basal cell carcinoma on my nose which is presenting itself as a divot only no sore. no red. etc. *oh, never ask a plastic surgeon which I did in 01 - see a dermatologist). Some cholesterol issues - which may just be hyped up by my pcp who never told me my HDL ratio is GREAT!! She only looked at the cholesterol nuraber: 234. Then there is some pesky nodules on thyroid that might be growing a bit. And some older issues with ground glass nodules in upper lobes of lungs.
But the anemia is gone.

Everyone-- protect yourselves and DEMAND answers
. Never give up.

Thank you and good health to all.

Have you tried meteclopramide?

It helps stop regurgitation 2 ways - 1. it encourages the stomach to empty, so there is less in there to regurgitate, and 2. it tightens the oesophegal sphincter.

Another one tha might be worth a shot is Gaviscon

thank-you starrygal09...our health is truly in OUR own hanRAB. Thank-you John for the reccomendation but my GI dr doesn't reccomend that medicine for me b/c i have a lengthy history with depression and anxiety.

I am starting to look into this low carb thing so many people are talking about for reflux that doesn't respond to ppi's (and cases that do)...we'll see, haven't begun, i just ordered a book on it to guide me.

I have been on sooooooooooooooo many medicines over the past 3 years and honestly have never felt worse in my life, coincidence?

We would be such the pair. For me, I have been CT'd and xrayed too much. I have a nice glow at night like a firefly *j/k. They are bound and determined to find something with all this radiation...or perhaps cause something! lol Good luck to you with diet. Food is a great place to start. :)
