Acid Reflux and Celiac's Disease

Hi,

I'll try my best to make this a short story, since alot of the details are likely not needed. Basically over the last two years, I've had a pacemaker put in for a slow heart, put on medication for low blood presure and diagnosed with Celiac's disease. I was in sick kiRAB a lot and I am not 23, so the GI doc believes it is likely I had celiac for about 10-15 years based on my history. They believed it was celiac that caused my heart to weaken because it was also supressing my bone marrow and causing me to be anemic at the time of diagnosis. My vitamin levels were not great...B12 at 200 and Iron at 40, not dangerous, but not optimal.

Anyways, after diagnosis last Noveraber I have been gluten free. I have felt better, but not all my energy is back yet. Out of the blue recently I woke up with severe chest pain and was short of breath. I went to the ER and had my heart looked at just to be safe, but that was ok. The pain has stayed for the last week and I've realized it is acid reflux. The back of my tongue is inflammed with bumps and my throats is red/sore. I feels tight in my chest and I'm short of breath. The pain rises from the middle of my chest to my lower throat. In my lower throat it feels like there is a lump, so I swallow a lot. My throat is sore sometimes, but only when the reflux is bad. At times the pain subsides a small bit, but I always feel some pressure in the chest. It is usually painful all day, no matter if I eat or not. I tried Gaviscon and Zantac, both helped for about 10 minutes at best. I have never had acid reflux before, not even when I was undiagnoses celiac, so it is strange. Going a week straight now...I worry about the risks between Celiac and Esophogus cancer. I know it is not cancer, but should I go to the ER and get a scope done due to my history? Or would the ER even do that? Or should I just wait it out a couple months until my GI doc gets all the tests setup and done. Any information or advice is helpful. I'm not worried yet because it is likely nothing at all, but I can't help but keep myself on top of things.

Thanks in advance! :-)

Could you call your doctor's office, tell them about your symptoms and discomfort and see if they could prescribe something while you wait those two months for those tests to be performed? I can't imagine enduring pain for two months and damaging your esophagus and throat in the process.

I doubt very much you have cancer, but it is a good idea to get a baseline endoscopy if you have never had one. It sounRAB like you already have an appt. with a specialist coming up in two months for that. In the meantime, you need some relief. There is also OTC PPI's you can take like Prilosec or Prevacid. They are stronger than Zantac and may take away the pain until you get to the doctor. Maybe you can call the doctor's office and ask if it is OK to pick up an OTC PPI until your appt.

Hope you feel better soon.
