acid in lower GI too

In addition to chronic GERD, for the last 7 years I have also had IBS. I often have these truly painful bouts where I feel like I'm passing pure hydrochloric acid out through my lower GI tract.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this? And is it possible this points to over-production of acid in my system? I recently had a really bad flare up of GERD that coincided with one of these horrible acidic IBS bouts so I'm trying to figure out if they might be related.
