Accidentally recharged a car battery backwards?

Actually it was a motorcycle battery. It is brand new, receiving it's first charge. I had thought Black was + and Red was - ... but ohh I was wrong. It was on there for several hours before i checked and found the battery to be really warm. Have I ruined it?
Please don't answer if you don't know... a little explanation would be helpful too.
 
you probably burned a cell out on the battery.only way to find out if you ruined it is to hook it up right a see if it takes a charge.
