Accident with Significant Other?!?

First let me say congrats to all you guys/gals with significant others that ride. I think that's awesome that you have someone to share your passion with.

With that said, has anyone ever been involved in an accident while there significant other was riding along?

Curious because I don't ever hear of it much. I recently saw the video (for the 100th time) of the girl falling of that bike during a wheelie and thought how horrible that was.

Everyone of my past girlfriends wouldn't even come close to my bike. I guess it's not that bad though, because I would feel devastated if something ever happened to them on my motorcycle while riding together.

Any thoughts or experience?

Taking a passenger, let alone the significant other, is a risk and responsibility that shouldn't be taken lightly. I've seen vids of dumb ass doods ding dumb ass things and causing damage to their passenger or both of them. I ride cautiously around town in the first place so not to worried about there but when we go out into the country I have to remind myself that there's 2 of us.

With my SS having a passenger felt so natural I'd look forward to having a pillion bunny. I took my first passenger on the 1098 last week, it felt horrible! And she was an experienced passenger that weighed all of 100 lbs and five foot two maybe. It felt like my first days with the training wheels off. Add to that the stalling is back so it was even more to keep me stressed.

Never had an accident with anyone else let alone Legs on the back as has already been touched on you have to ride with someone else's safety in mind

Here is my issue that kind of relates......

My fiancee enjoys riding on the back of my motorcycle, but I take that responsibility very serious so I try to shy away from that as much as possible just because I get very worried.

With that said, she wants to learn how to ride. So she will be taking the MSF course for sure, but just the thought of watching her making a mistake on the road and being completely helpless worries me almost even more than having her on the back. I think I'm just being a bit of a worry wart and I just need her to understand the risk involved either way.

I don't let my gf pillion. Could you imagine the guilt you would suffer regardless of whose fault the accident was if she was seriously injured, paralysed, lost a limb???

no thanks, not for me

I'm actually in the exact same situation. Scared to have an event like that happen and not be able to do anything about it. But That's how people feel about me riding, but they know it's a passion of mine, so I guess I'd have to have the same mentality.

I was very close to having a wreck with my gf on back of my 848. I was riding third with two buddies. Just going 30 or so in town and a light turned yellow. Normally we casually roll through, but my buddy leading us panicked with me last with a passenger and erred (10+ years riding experience). Instead of going through, he breaked. I saw his back end fish tail, and heard both him and #2 squeal the tires trying to stop.

I knew I didn't have a chance to stop safely, so I lined up right behind him (didn't know which way he was going to go) and when he stopped, swerved around him. He leaned his bike to the left as I passed on the right, between the two bikes, going about 20-25.

My left foot knicked his right foot and I rolled safely through the intersection.

Shook us up a bit, but it did build a lot confidence in my riding skills (had only been riding for a few months), and felt like we knew each other well enough to handle difficult situations.

It was a scary situation, but we're much more comfortable riding together now - and he no longer worries about me in back so much. He knows that if he rides with his normal tendancies (safe rider), I'll make the correct decision behind him.

And by the way - I love having my girl ride with me, but it does scare the @#*$ out of me, so I make her wear a helmet (like I do) despite protests. It is an intimidating responsibility.

.............same!!, wife has absolutely no interest in bikes, never been on the back of any bike ive owned !! although a few years ago we hired a HD,out at Ayers Rock,...which she enjoyed ,after the event !!,hours before the ride she was an absolute nervous wreck ,about the whole idea. her end comment later was 'if you buy one of these [HD],id go for rides with you'.......thanks,but no thanks....hj
