Accessing data?

Hi,

I am completely new to PDAs and got a T|X last friday. So far I am fairly happy with it. I am even more happy to have found this place and read a lot already. Now I have a probably rather stupid question: How can I access my data?

I have installed some software (namely Life as I see it, a Journalling Program and AccountsManager2) and I wonder if there is any other way to access and use the data or export it somehow from the Palm. I intend to use the palm mostly for this stuff, but it seems to me, that PDAs like this are becoming extinct, I already had a hard time finding something nice (what the T|X really is) without being a cellphone.

Any help or hint is appreciated. Better to know it by know and stop using these programs then not being able to get to my data in a year or so.

Greetings

=> Welcome to the PDA world..

=> an excellent choice.

=> From what I could see after downloading and exploring, one of the softwares you mentioned above (Life As I See It) does not seem to have a way to export its data.

On a TX, you can easily determine whether a software has the export feature - by tapping on the Menu icon at the bottom of the screen (between the Find (magnifying glass) and the Time icons). If the export feature is there, then you should be able to see it on one of the drop down menus. In the case of the journaling software above, there is no drop down menu at all.

As such, there is no easy way for you to access the data using other than the Palm software.

A harder way : You could try opening the data file using a text editor or a hex editor. In the case of the journaling software above the data file is named LifeDB.pdb. But before you can do that you need to copy the pdb file from the TX's RAM to computer, either by using an SD card or by hotsync and then getting the file from the Backup folder on the computer.

Unfortunately, the pdb data, as read by a text editor, only clearly show the journal entry text, WITHOUT the timestamp (date & time of the journal entry).

As such, if you need the ability to read your journals using a third-party software, then "Life As I See It" is not a suitable software.

=> You might want to explore whether DayNotez is suitable for you. It is an establised software, and has the export feature.
