I was driving my truck down the highway and it started to slowly decelerate. I had the pedal all the way down, and it started to go from 70 to 65, to 60. It started to kind of misfire, with it making these popping noises in the engine bay. It kept slowing down to about 40 mi/hr. I put it in neutral and rev-ed up the engine, and put it in gear. Still didn't help. I got off the highway, put it into 4WD, still had problems. Put it back into 2WD and it was still "popping" and barely making it to 35MPH. Barely made it home. Any ideas before a pay a mechanic a fortune to look at it? Im usually somewhat mechanically inclined, but i'm kinda stumped on this one. Like I said, it's an older 1990 Chevy 1500 4WD with a 350V8. Ive only owned it for a few months, so I am not sure what all has been done to it so far. In the last few months, I have:

-Replace rear drum brakes (drums, pads, everything)
-Replaced starter, and spliced in some new wiring that was old and brittle
-Replaced battery and connections
-Oil change and filter (added lucas because oil pressure was running very low (5 - 15lbs when idling, 15 - 25lbs when driving)

That's all that I can think of. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

Small block with high mileage, possible timing chain and gears issue. Put number 1 at TDC and see where the ignition rotor is pointing in relationship to number one on the distributor. What do you have for fuel pressure? Any check engine light on? Popping back sounds like timing issues, I think I'd start there.

I own a 1991 2500 and had the same problem. It was the fuel pump. Yes, the one in the gas tank.

Pay someone to do it.
$700.00

ADDED:
If you're lucky, it's just the fuel filter.
Inside the frame rail below the drivers seat. (under the truck)

ADDED: #2
Oh, by the way, quit running the truck under 1/4 tank of gas.

ADDED#3
It couldn't hurt to replace the distributor cap, and rotor too.
