Are there any rules to start a new private chatting in yahoo? .. i used to enter the chat room and search for a good nickname and "hi

but some people make me feel that there are something wrong or there are a traditions which man should make before open a private window for chatting .. when someone answer your greeting with "what's up who are you and what do you want" ..
i smile .. who are me? and what do i want?! .. i thought it's clear! .. i'm someone wanna recognize another one who care about the same topic which i wanna chat about!
please someone teach me how can i avoid this
