About these new Evangelion movies...

I've been seeing FUNimation release the first movie under three different titles. First there's Evangelion 1.0, then Evangelion 1.01 and now we have Evangelion 1.11.

Am I right in thinking these are all the same movie or what's going on?

In terms of substance, they are basically the same. What's different is the picture quality. Funimation's first release is 1.01, which AFAIK is 1.0 with minor technical improvements. There is no such thing as a R1 release of the original 1.0. 1.11 is the ideal release. It has slightly more footage, but most significantly it improves video quality substantially by "fixing" light/dark contrasts (for some reason 1.01 tenRAB to be much darker than necessary at many points; not so with 1.11). 1.11 is the only version that will ever see the light of day on Blu-Ray, which says a lot.

1.01 and 1.11 are not changes or decisions made by FUNimation.
They are simply following the Japanese releases.

1.0 being the original theater version, 1.01 is the original DVD release, and 1.11 being the high definition (no darkness problem) version with a few minutes of additional footage included in the film that was not seen in the original theater version and 1.01 DVD release.

Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0's DVD/Blu-Rei release (IIRC) will be 2.22.

Since 2.22 will be the next release after 1.11, its safe to assume they'll have the same treatment? (As in, 2 Disc- Collectors Editions.) Funny this topic is here, Just watched 1.01 on my HDTV for the last time (its becoming a shelf item after I get 1.11 which I preordered last night.)
