Abe Lincoln freed the slaves...?

I vaguely remember learning something in high school or college that he freed the slaves not because he was a swell guy, but it had to do with money somehow... If I recall correctly, it was because he didn't want the South to have a higher economy that the North? IDK- but I think it had something to do with the economy.

Please clarify this for me!
