Abdominal Pain and Accompanied Symptoms.

Hi everyone, first timer here on this site. For about a month and a half my stomach has been distended especially after eating (I look like a full blown pregnant woman everytime i eat!). I went to my family doctor and got an ultrasound done, showed nothing but underlying gas and an ovarian cyst that measured to 4.6cm(About 2 inches).

About 2 weeks i started getting a pain on the right side of my belly button and on my lower right side of my abdomen, also accompanied by veeery dark stool/dark diareah, fatigue, weak, but no fever. I called my doctor asap and he told me to go the emergency room because it could be possible appendicitis, okay so i went, they said the pain was due to an ovarian cyst that measured to 4.6cm(almost 2 inches) and they discharged me. (Funny how the new pain was caused by a cyst?? ) I had received my birth control shot Depro- Vera in the beginning of September, so my gynocologist said that the shot will help the cyst out by making it smaller (this was before i was hospitalized).

So what now? I went to a G.I. doctor and he said i could have possibly have developed an intolerance to lactose, or it can be a hernia or an ulcer. So he told me to lay off anything that contains lactose including high fructose and sorbitol and to see how it goes for about a week. Its been day 4 on this diet and nothing has been getting better, still the same symptoms except nauseau started and weird green ribbon like stool, extreme fatigue and when i do get the pain i also feel shooting pains down my hips to about mid thigh.

I just want to hear someone else's input on this because to me this does not sound normal. Ive read and read online but there isnt anyone i can really talk to about this and that might have some insight. So please, if anyone has anything to add to this, please do so. Thank You...

Hello Mairy,

Perhaps a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy might not be a bad idea, just to make sure that all is well in the colon. How old are you ? If you are younger, doctors have a tendency to dismiss colon issues but if you are having such debilitating problems, it is not a bad idea to insist on one of these procedures. The sigmoidoscopy looks at the bottom third of your colon and the colonoscopy looks at the entire colon. You should also have some bloodwork done on your liver to make sure that all is well on that front as well.

Very dark stool may mean old blood which can be coming from further up, such as the stomach. This is probably why the doctor suspected an ulcer. An ulcer can be seen with an endoscopy which is a tube that is inserted down your throat and into your stomach (you are usually sedated for this ... same for the colonoscopy).

If you are following your doctor's advice and nothing is happening (ie. your symptoms are not improving) then go back and insist they investigate further. It's the only way to get to the cause of your problems. Your symptoms don't seem to jive with the ovarian cyst as the cause. I have never heard of cysts causing the type of stool symptoms that you describe, nor of fatigue. The cyst may be incidental as all women have ovarian cysts which come and go on their ovaries with their cycles.

I hope you get to the bottom of this. Don't be afraid to insist on further treatment, especially if you are not feeling well and it is not going away.

Take care and all the best for a speedy recovery from your symptoms.

thanx for your reply Estria, funny little thing has happened over the past few days. All of a sudden i got so sick to my stomach i didn't know whether i had to throw up or go to the bathroom, ended up being severe diarreah, after that episode, i was fine for 3 days! no pain, no nauseau, nothing :) but then i woke up on the 4th day after the episode and i had the same pain and symptoms again, 2 days later, the same episode again, but the original symptoms were still there but not as bad, now i just randomly get the pains and not so often after i eat. Yesterday i woke up with a pain in my throat and today it is worse accompanied by coughing, and also another factor to consider, my boyfriend woke up today with similar pains and the same episode i had and he felt better. Im starting to believe i could just have a virus but my body was trying to fight it off all along and now im actually getting sick. What are your thoughts on this??
