A writing technique called Red ____?

This really drives me insane. I always remember it, and then forget it a day later, and have to ask again. Ugggh. This technique's name is (I think) Red something, and I believe that something is a name of a fish. It's used in detective books, mostly, because the technique is used to make one character very, very suspicious, and then have it turn out to be an entirely different character. The name came about because police trainers used to use it to train dogs to follow a scent. Like a conditioned response sort of thing.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
