A 'What If' ivolving 4Kids and Funi

We know that thing with One Piece, but I want to get a clear picture of the results of that event being applied to non-anime properties.

I'll list some examples and I want to see your hypotheses.

Di-Gata Defenders
Winx Club
Viva Pinata
Chaotic
TMNT and TMNT: FF

I may be wrong, but honestly, I don't really see any of those shows being any different other than having the FUNimation voice casts and possibly keeping their original openings. I don't think any of these shows have 'questionable content' that needed to be censored by 4Kids; the few cuts that Winx Club and Di-Gata Defenders endured were mainly due to time constraints, IIRC. Di-Gata and Viva Pinata wouldn't even have to be dubbed for US audiences since the former is Canadian and the latter was more or less made by 4Kids and produced by Rare, which is housed in the UK.

4kids produced 3 of those. Di-Gata is as is from Nelvana's original production. Winx Club is the only one that's a dub. That said if FUNi handled it I would imagine it would turn out better but they don't dub European programing so it wouldn't have happened.

Better examples to try would be as follows:

Ultimate Muscle, Shaman King, Yu-Gi-Oh!, YGO GX, YGO 5Ds, Dinosaur King, Tokyo Mew Mew, Kirby, Sonic X, Doremi, etc.

All of which would easily be better in FUNimation's hands. Though they may or may not have been able to extend the TV run of Muscle like 4kids did.

And I'll also offer the flip-side:

What if 4kids had their way with these popular Japanese animated series that FUNimation distributes?

Dragonball GT, Kodocha, Case Closed (good luck with that one, but Fox Kids apparently did try), Shin Chan

I'd love to see what FUNi would have done with Shaman King, Sonic X, and Ultimate Muscle.

I'm all for FUNi picking up Shaman King, since 4Kids never finished releasing the DVDs and doesn't appear to have the lisence to the show anymore. It'll probably never happen though.

This thread doesn't make much since then. Really because the non-anime series 4Kids has most likey be the same way, except maybe Winx Club. The only other difference would've been networks the shows aired on likely would've been CN or the FUNi channel. Some might have gone just straight to DVD.

For Winx Club, FUNi should just bring over the English version, as in the UK version. It's more serious than the 4Kids version. And BTW, Di-Gata Defenders isn't a 4Kids property.

FUNimation doesn't make their own shows. As for if they did... There's no telling how they would have turned out. But I doubt much if any of them would be on Saturday mornings.

FUNimation is an anime distributor first and foremost. They release non-anime on DVD for various companies as well but they just publish those and don't make them.

If they had Winx Club they would have made a better dub I would imagine (no I don't think they would use the UK dub honestly) but it may have never aired on US television unless it went directly to CN.

Agreed. I've been actually confused what was this thread was talking about. 4Kids produced TMNT, which includes FF, Viva Pinata and Chaotic so there wouldn't be a point for FUNimation to work on those series. Like Sketch said, FUNimation is an anime distributor first and the only part they have is with releasing non-anime DVD for other companies. Di-Gata is the same from Nelvana's original production. 4Kids doesn't even dub over it with their own voice actors. Winx Club is the only that was mentioned that was a dub and that could have possibly worked with FUNimation, even though I'm not sure if they would do a non-anime series like that. If they did, I would think it would turn out better and I agree that it would have to either CN or straight to DVD.

Unless it was anime (and a good one at that) FUNi wouldn't want whatever 4kids offered I would imagine.

FUNimaiton doesn't make their own shows. While the idea of a TMNT made by FUNimation does make me wonder how they would have handled it... There's no reason this "what if" scenario would have occured.

And there's also no telling how the shows would turn out if FUNi made them instead of 4kids because FUNi has never made their own show and let's be honest... those who lack experience in doing something will probably do a bad job at first.

I don't remember if 4kids made anything else themselves before TMNT but I don't think that was the case.

And yes I'm sure Peter Laird's involvement is the main reason why TMNT turned out well even in the first season but by season 2 4kids knew how to handle TMNT very well. But then again there are those people refer to as "one hit wonders".

Funi has released DVDs of Degrassi High, that's not anime.

I think it would be funnier to imagine if 4kids got TDI.

Cut out all swearing and nudity. Replace half the dialogue with more "kid friendly" stuff and remove all references to Canada (Tuck Shop becomes 7-11, Owen now wears a Yankee's shirt, the series takes place in America).

It was already mentioned that FUNimation has released non-anime DVDs, but they're not a part of anything non-anime beyond stuff like that. I could only imagine the chaos amount of complaints from people if 4Kids got something like Total Drama Island and I'm honestly glad that's the case. It can get really annoying to see the same complaints about 4Kids over and over again after awhile.

I agree with D Dubbs that the odds are pretty poor since 4Kids did renewed their rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! until 2012. Not too surprising really since the DVDs sales for the second season set were pretty good, the ratings for GX were decent to good and I'm sure that they get some of the profits from the card game, though I'm not sure how exactly. Besides, I thought I heard that 4Kids made it hard for FUNimation to try to get another uncut release of Yu-Gi-Oh! or something like that.
