A TMO, 3rd party software "issue"?

I am finding my initial foray into the world of BB to be very unsatisfactory. My 8100 is unable to run eMobile News or eMobile Stocks at all. Every time I try either one I get the "java.io..IOException:Open Tunnel - failure". I am pretty sure that my TCP setting is 100% correct. I am still unable to get OperaMini to install. A very nice TMO tech told me that they don't support Opera, but she tried her best to help. It turns out that I needed to update my 8100's system software. As a Mac user, that was an adventure in and of itself! ( I bought a copy of Parallels that turns out to be useless as far as BlackBerry is concerned )

As I continue to search the net, I am finding more posts from a variety of forums that suggest that this is a known problem where TMO is concerned. Folks who use other carriers find it much easier to use 3rd party apps. I have been a very happy TMO customer for several years, and I have no interest in spending $500 to $600 for an iPhone. But I need to be able to utilize these additional programs as I find myself traveling more often.

Does any of this sound familiar?

My APN has been set correctly. I have removed and reinstalled the specific apps with no improvement. One positive; I tried Apple's Boot Camp and found that it does a MUCH better job of syncing with the Pearl. It s amazingly fast and easy to use. It would be nice if the applications just worked....

I have Tmo and started on 0.64 os. I did not have issues running 3rd party apps ( not the ones you are runnning except opera) but i did opt to upgrade my os to rogers 4.2.1.94. seems to work quicker with less lag and less errors.
