A STAR WARS Question

When STAR WARS first came out was it just called STAR WARS?

I know people now refer to it as STAR WARS Episode IV A New Hope but was it also labeled that or was it only labeled that when the "new lot" were made?

Was it STAR WARS or STAR WARS A New Hope or something else?

Looking at my post count this post should have been about the omen!

It was 'STAR WARS' for a while after its original release in 1977.

From 1981 onwarRAB for all theatrical and home video releases the title was changed with addition of Episode IV - A New Hope as a subtitle.

Thanks guys...........

There was a Star Wars question on EggheaRAB earlier and the bloke gave the full Episode IV malarky as the answer.

I then said to her indoors "it wasn't always called that"

An argument ensued..............

she text loaRAB of people who backed her up...........

I just knew that my RAB mates would help..............

It was only called Star Wars but once the success was clear some studio exec quoted some PR bull about George's story being a 9 part saga which sounded a bit far fetched in 1978.

I still think it was bull as it took Lucas nearly 2 decades to do the first 3

but the Ep 4 subtitle was added when Empire Strikes Back came out- presumably to give credibility to the story

The original release on the cinema was entitled Star Wars,as was the video that I have in front of me.

However as the titles scroll up the screen it says "Episode VI A New Hope" and so far as memory serves it did at the cinema.

Yeah the subtitle 'Episode IV - A New Hope' was added for the 1981 re-release. Empire Strikes Back, released in 1980, had 'Episode V' on it from word go.

Lucas only ever planned for 6 films. It was just speculation and the odd crazy comment from people during the hype that brought up the 9 and even 12 film rumours! He waited so long to do the prequels because he wanted CGI effects to be good enough to realise the huge city planet, Coruscant, and the Jedi in their prime.

funny that cuz not only have i read in more than 1 article over the years about plans for 9, in a documentary broadcast in 1999 to promote TPM, Steven Speilberg claimed " George always wanted to make 9"

No it didnt.

The Star Wars logo appears then it goes straight to the "It was a time of war" crawl- there is no "Episode 4- A New Hope".

For confirmation check out the 2 disc dvd that has the original 1977 version included
