That's great that you caught the fever full on! I fish a lot of ponds and rivers too for bass and started fishing for trout about a year ago too. I have a simple rod set up I use in ponds and rivers that I like and won't break the bank. It's an Abu Garcia 276ui reel on a 6'6" Berkley Amp rod and together this is about $60. I don't know your skill level with a baitcaster or spinning reel and this is a simple under spin spincast reel and I love it. I also have a bunch of quality baitcasters and spinning combos and I find myself using this a lot due to ease of use. Now if you want a baitcasting or spinning outfit I would start with a Berkley Lightning rod or Shakespeare Ugly Stik both come in casting and spinning models and are good quality for a beginner. If you want to get into baitcasting reels you can't go wrong with Abu Garcia baitcasters and they range from 50-300 bucks depending on the model. For spinning reels I like to use Shimano and they have models ranging from 30-300 bucks. Hope this helps on pointing you in the right direction on getting a new rod and reel setup.
