A Question on Eclipses... what happens when Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun?

During a solar eclipse the sun is darkened by the moon for a very brief amount of time, but when it comes to a planet nearly as big as the Earth passing between the Earth and the Sun with an orbit time of 224.7 Earth day's... how large and long of an eclipse can such an alignment/eclipsing of the sun be?
could such an alignment be detrimental for life on Earth
