A question of Teletoon.

Hi, I have another question of Teletoon and this one is understandable.
Ok Teletoon is in English and French but is only in 7 million homes
YTV is only in English but is in 10 million homes. How come?
 
Yeah I couldn't get YTV around here until I got digital cable, but Teletoon (FR) is easy to get on basic cable.

But where'd you get those figures??
 
Yeah I think it's because for most of the country YTV is part of the basic cable package while Teletoon is with extended. Except for Quebec apparently, I'm assuming because there is no French-language YTV. But that means YTV is in the homes of people with just basic and the people with extended, while Teletoon is just for those with extended.
 
I'm not Canadian, but I think I have an answer.

YTV is a must-carry network according to the CRTC, Canada's equivalent to the FCC. Cable operators must carry YTV on their lineups whereas Teletoon doesn't have that distinction.

Now, somebody in Canada explain why there are two premium movie channels, yet they share the same lineup and not nationwide (half the country has one channel and the other has the other).
 
:p so true so true... Discoms and lame CW 'pretty rich white kids with problems' shows.

Incidentally it is also on basic cable like YTV...
 
I guess that's like YTV, though lacking in Nickelodeon obsession :sweat:


If you mean Movie Central and The Movie Network, well the former is owned by Corus and is for western Canada while the latter is owned by Astral Media and is for eastern Canada.

I think the two companies struck some agreement or something so as not to compete, and they just divided the country in half. Though I guess if they wanted to work together they could just share the one channel, but whatever. I can't think of any other good reason. HBO Canada is a joint venture between them, so they are willing to work together. Coincidentally Teletoon is actually a joint venture between the two companies too.
