A question about photography?

My teacher for photography class wants me to take "Simplicity" photos. (Things that I basically find simple in everyday life.) So far, think I've done pretty good, but I still don't know how to work the camera.(Like after I take the picture, it wont let me change it to get the green light quickly.) Also, what does it mean if it says the number 9? Does it mean I can take 9 more photos, or does it mean I have taken 9 photos? Lastly, I've taken some cool photos, but I still need more. What should I take photos of? Should I stick more with still life or nature?
