A question about dog backpacks?

I have a Jack Russell Terrier who is about 15 lbs. If I go hiking with him should I give him a backpack like in this link

He is very strong and in shape for his size.
He is only about 1 year 4 months.

I don't want to hurt him with weight, but like I said for his size he is very strong. Should I get him a bag, and if so how much could I put in it?

That pack is likely too large for a dog that size in its smallest incarnation and has the center of gravity set too far back- it shoudl be over the dog's shoulder blades. I would go with a Wenaha, which comes in Mini to fit a dog 10-20 pounds and puts the weight in an appropriate place for a small dog: http://www.travelpetcarrier.com/page/1325483 You can probably find them cheaper than this site, it's just to show you what I'm talking about. He can carry an empty pack now, but no weight until he's 18-24 months. Then you can slowly add weight, up to an absolute maximum of 25% of their body weight (never exceeding that amount). I use a pack for one of mine for walks to help burn some excess energy. It seems to help.
 
WHY??? You carry the stuff, and let him concentrate on having fun in the woods!

Other answered a cell phone, water bottle, and compass- really? Then what will he do with it if he gets lost?
