A portable media player that plays AVI?

I currently have an Ipod 60GB. It can only support MPEG-4 as far as I know, and that also at low quality.

I have quite a few AVI files. Mostly playable through the DIVX codec. I find it taxing on my HDD space to have the original AVI file, as well as a space consuming MPEG-4 file. (The MP4 has crappy quality, meant for the ipod screen).

I recently looked into H.264 encoding, which apparently the ipod supports. I don't know what the limitations are, and whether the quality will be as good as AVI.

Note, I just want to have 1 GOOD QUALITY COPY of each video file, which works on my portable media player.

Can you clarify whether can convert all my videos into H.264 and continue using my Ipod, or whether AVI is my best bet and I should get another compatible Media Player (suggest one!). Also, I'd prefer a decent sized screen.

PS: I looked into the Archos. I says something about AVI compatibility. Can you clarify?

Thanks
