treasure

in his personal effects a wallet
well-worn brown leather
ingrained with life
she hesitated
opened and found
inside with new notes
a name-band
the one placed on her tiny wrist
minutes after her birth
he had treasured it
for thirty-nine years
she swallowed her sadness
and felt so valued
so precious
