This story is probably not unfamiliar to those of you here. And to all of you who are here...thank you! I have searched and searched for people who were sharing my "problem" for almost a year, and here you all are! I am grateful that we can come together and share our stories.
My anxiety began in Noveraber of 2009, right before Thanksgiving. I woke in the middle of the night feeling as though I was going to have a heart attack! My heart was pounding and racing, my muscles were all as hard as a rock and I was beginning to hyperventalate. I immediately called 911, only to realize 1/2 hour later that I was having a panic attack! Now, years earlier I had suffered from these (when I was 18), but they eventually went away and I never gave them another thought. This time however, it is different. It all began that night and everyday after I had like three full blown attacks a day! I was in Grad school full time, working with Autistic children full time and taking care of my own two beautiful kiddos. Not to mention all the housework and bills on my own. FOr months I went through this without contacting a doctor, finally in January I went to a doctor. They tried to perscribe me numerous anti-depressants, valume and everything else. Finally in late February I met with another doctor in the same practice and he gave me adivan. I LOVE adavan because I can take it only when I need it. In March I began my student teaching and we went down to one income. While teaching, I suffered from irruglar heartbeats, bouts of anxiety and what I can only describe as a near constant feeling of excitability (like you are just about to take the first drop on a roller coaster). It was horrible!!! Finally, I changed my diet, 8 glasses of water a day, herbal tea at night, hot baths, calming music and I learned to let go of many things that I was used to having a tight reign. Once I began to let loose and have a "my cup is 1/2 full attitude, I found that this worked, although only a little. Deep breathing and meditation helped, exercise and my Rosary =} I took up reading, drawing and doing puzzles. I also found a man by the name of charles linden (you all must try him, his program is AMAZING!!!!) Anyway, in July my daytime attacks stopped for the most part and I began to suffer from them at night. For two months I only woke up twice a week with a racing heart. Now I wake up every night exactally 1 to 2 hours after I initially fall asleep with a racing heart. I try the cold water method, reading, doing meaningless research on the computer and watching TV. After an hour or two I can fall back asleep and stay sleeping for the rest of the night. Right around my menstral cycle I have found that my daytime anxiety returns, but not nearly as bad as it once was. I have had an EKG and other heart tests done, nothing. I have had bloodwork, nothing. I am so confused as to why I am having anxiety only 1 1/2 hours after I fall asleep?! Is there a clock in my body telling me that this is the time to wake up with a racing heart because it has happened for so long? I have tried to create new neuro pathways, but nothing has worked. ;)

Dear Neener33,
I am not a female, but I can say this, if your body is use to waking up with a fast heart beat maybe you should think about taking a adavan before you go to sleep or have some type of medication given to you that has less side effects and is mild. I suffer from similar things. But I will say this, I am also not a huge medication type of person, but sometimes we need to take something for a short while in order to help us out some. adavan sadly is an addicting drug so you have to be careful when taking it x amount of time. Maybe you should try taking half of the adavan for like a week and after a week go off of them for maybe two weeks. I am NOT a doctor nor a RN, but I am only assuming here that it could work. But maybe this is something you can ask your doc about. It actually may work.

Best of luck,

Mythx. Thank you. My PCP perscribed me Adivan (15ct 0.5 mg). I had them for 5 months! I would only take 1/4 then moved to 1/2 recently. I do take 1/2 before bed, but not every night because I hate meRAB. One of the nurses told me that I was in danger of becoming addicted because I was taking only 1/4 to 1/2 the perscribed dose. I dont like the way they make me feel. I am scared that my body will bild an immunity to it, and I will be forced to take higher doses. The doctor actually suggested I may be depressed, I am soooo far from depressed it isnt even funny! So in June, I found a man named Charles Linden and began the Linden Method. It consists of deep relaxation through meditation, deep breathing exercises and some tie chi (sp). This helped me so much. But each night when I wake I know that this will happen once then I will sleep through the rest of my night just fine. Thank you so much for your response, because my PCP actually suggested the same thing. I will try and let you know how it goes. BLESSINGS!!

Neener33,
I sure hope that you are able to have success on this method. However, if 1/2 isn't enough bump it up to 1mg (Talk to your doctor before you take more then given. Online advice and help is very nice to have, but can be dangerous if you take the advices without first talking to your doctor about this advice.) Good luck!

neener33, have you considered sleep apnea or some other sleep problem? Thats what was causing me to jump out of bed, heart racing, etc.. a couple hours into sleep.

For many people, sleep apnea symptoms are worse during REM sleep. This is because your body is paralyzed during REM and the tissues in your throat are most relaxed. Usually the onset of REM sleep in 90 minutes, right when you've been experiencing your problems.

Treating my sleep apnea has made a profound difference in my anxiety levels!
