A mysterious person paid for your meal at restaurant: a typical thing?

I went to a buffet dinner by myself and was eating like a pig (seriously), there was nothing modest about my style of eating. Anyway, when its was time for me to pay, the waitress came and said the guy across from me already paid for me. She handed me a napkin with his number that said "your beautiful, have a nice nite".

This is kinda funny to me, should I say thank you?
Is this guy normal? or is this a typical thing? I know people doing that for drinks, but not so much with restaurant.
What is going one?
thank for answering

BTW, he already left when I knew of this. I think I kinda remember who he is.
