A lot of things are messed up with my ipod touch?

So I just reinstalled itunes after clearing my hard drive to speed my computer up. But anything I own an ipod touch, and I have the latest version of itunes. The only problem is is that I cannot sync my ipod touch to my computer. At first i wasn't really paying attention to the popups..but here is what is happening now.

First I restore my ipod touch, and it restores it. I plug it back in and then it asks me if I would like to set it up as a new ipod, or restore it from a back up. I dragged the wrong music folder into itunes the first time and that messed my touch up, it had the wrong music on it. Yea I know not to smart. But anyways I dragged the new music into itunes and this is where I am now. Since I just cleared my hard drive, I can't do a restore, so on the option to restore the touch or make a new one, I have to make a new one. So it goes for a little while.

But then an error pops up saying it cannot sync my ipod touch, and it is missing a file. Then a second one pops up saying that an interal error occured (-48). Then you know that little meter at the bottom of the sync screen on your computer, where it tells you how much space you have left? I have an eight gig touch, but suddently the meter says my maximum compacity is 4 gigs, and then the "other" bar jumps from just a few megabits to three gigs..so it claims that I have a for gig ipod, and that I only have one gig open.

Can someone please explain how to fix this problem in a very detailed an simple way.

I already tried restoring my ipod a number of times, so that won't work.

Thanks!
