Why does NO3 have a charge of -1 (I know there's 3 oxygens which gives a charge of -6 but Nitrogen should only have a charge of +1, giving an overall charge of -5)

How do you work out the charges of transition metals when they've bonded with other, non transition elements, and therefore how do you work out the charge of the whole compound?
