A leafy plant that grows in shade and clay?

I have an area in the front yard that is completely shaded by tall tree like bushes..and also trees on the east side. We are in North Texas (zone 7b) and the ground is pretty clay-like. I want something that will grow 2-4 feet, not too bushy and will come back every year without effort.

I am considering elephant ears since we have them in the back and they always return bigger on their own, but the front yard isn't really 'tropical' and elephant ears might look strange. Any other suggestions or ideas to tie tropical looking elephant ears into a more forest-like garden?
