i follow to close? I got into a accident to day and I was hit in front by a Cadillac that was backing up at a yield sign. This was my 1st experience of a car accident ever so i was in shock and didn't say the right thing when the police came to me and ask. Instead of telling the police she back up and hit me i just said her back light wasn't showing. The police gave me a ticket said i was following to close and i was lying to him. I didn't tell him weather i did or didn't hit her so how could i have lie. Can anyone give me some advice on how to deal with this situation?

You can opt to go to traffic court to dispute the ticket. Explain what happened to the judge and hope for the best.

You should always give the cops as much information you can. They put it in a report explaining the details from all persons involved. Explain the situation to the judge. Be prepared to answer all of his questions truthfully. Seeing how the police didn't have all the information needed in the report, he will probably ask a lot of questions trying to get the whole story. Good luck.

In the strictest sense, you can be too close anytime someone stops at a yield sign, stop light, or stop sign... then goes too far, then backs up. In many jurisdictions, you are required to leave space for the offending driver to back up and correct the mistake.

So, try to convince the judge that you expected the driver to move along, and since you did not see the back-up lights she hit you. You may need to show that the other car has defective equipment for this to work. Lots of work... good luck.
