a good war stratagy game?

im looking to buying a good computer stratagy game where the goal is to basicly take over the world. i would really like to buy, ''Empire: Total War,'' but for one, i am not interested in haveing to make a monthly payment.

is their any games similer to Empire: Total War, that doesnt require a monthly payment, and has good gameplay/graphics?
