A good starting camera for photography?

My girlfriend wants to have a career in photography. Shes alright at taking pics but she also has a really cheap camera. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how she could pursue a career in photography. Like good cameras? Schools in the southern indiana Illinois area?...just stuff like that
