A good lens for band photography?

I'm trying to get into doing promo photos for local bands and am in the market for a good lens for this. Obviously I'm looking for something with a wide angle and something that can give me great depth of field control, but obviously they move around a lot, so it'd be more candid shots than actual poses.

I shoot with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi / 400D .

Any suggestions?
