A good combo of freshwater fish?

I had three gouramis that got sick, so I cleaned the tank and then they died in the new water.
So i want more, whats a good combo?
20 gallon tank that includes guppies.
I love guppies.
Also since the sick fish died in the new water and added salt.
Do I need to clean the tank again for the new fish?
