theres aggressive, semi aggressive, and peaceful "tropical community fish". if you're asking if semi aggressive and peaceful can be mixed together..its a yes and no. it depends what fish. you dont want to add a semi aggressive fish like an anglefish, with peaceful neon tetras--they'll get eaten.
add on details of what fish you're thinking about mixing, and i can help you out more...but if youre asking if you can mix a gourami with other fish..the answer is yes.
gouramis dont need brackish water. they are freshwater. i have one in my 55g tank with other freshwater fish :] dwarf gouramis are more peaceful, and the bigger ones (gold, and 3spot/blue) gouramis are more aggressive. they are territorial, so only get one.
