A couple of S50 questions

Greetings all. It's been 3 months to the day that I first logged in. Been busy riding my '07 S50, when it hasn't been raining or I'm not slaving away at my 2 jobs to pay for my new toy. :D

First question. Does anyone else out there have a problem with the front break sqeaking? I only have 800 miles on it so far but the squeak has been a constant. It's really embarassing when I'm riding such a cool looking bike.

I had the 600 mile service and one of the guys at the shop told me to apply the front break really hard and that will blow the break dust out and the squeaking will stop. Been there, done that and it still squeaks.

Any suggestions, clues, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Second question. I get engine knock almost all of the time. It's driving me insane. :madd: I started out using Marathon 89 octane, but a friend told me their gas was crap in bikes. I switched to Citgo 89 octane and still get knocks. Help.

Thanks a bunch.

The front brake squeek has been a problem for the Intruder/ S50 for 20 years now. A set of aftermarket brake pads, along with a drop of high-temp brake grease on the caliper pins, is the cure. Taking your stock pads out and putting a drop of the high-temp brake grease on each caliper pin will help, as will keeping the pads, rotor, and caliper clean, but the problem is mostly just that the stock pads suck.

As for the knocking, this is NOT normal. I have never put anything more than 87 octane cheap stuff in mine and it runs fine without a touch of knocking or pinging. Have the dealer look at it- that's what that warranty is for.

I hose down my front brake about twice a month with brake cleaning spray, it helps alot. There are lots of people who use 87 octane gas as I understand it and the dealer made a big deal about how it will run on it. Mine sucks with 87 octane. i didn't get knocking so much as just poor sluggish performance (noticeable even at highway speeds) so your problem sounds a bit different. 89 octane cured my problems. I've got about 15,000 miles on my 05.

Change you pads to the EBC 103HH pads and the noise will go away. You will also stop better. You may not be knocking the Intruders are known for piston slap which sounds like knocking. If your worried about it have your stealer check it out.

Thanks a bunch. It's almost time to put the bike away for the winter (it was in the 40's here last night). I'll take the bike in for (another) check and take care of the brakes in the spring.

I feel sorry for you it was 99 here yesterday. Can ride bike all year round here its a pain when its 110 no such thing as a cool breeze when your ridding. Stay safe.

Like Scott58, I use brake cleaning spray (ArmorAll QuickSilver II Wheel Cleaner) to help the front brake squeak. I also have a front end squeak on my '06 S50, which is actually worse than the squeak in the front brake. For it, I spray either Pyroil Penetrating Oil or Jig-A-Loo Lubricant (www.jigaloo.com) where the forks connect to the wheels. WD-40 was originally recommended, but it doesn't seem to work. I've used 87 octane for 4,000 miles without a problem.

IMHO, WD-40's not the best lubricant available....in fact, there are plenty better. It's a great penetrating solvent, however. I prefer the white lithium grease spray I have for lubrication. We used the stuff in the factory where I used to work on the conveyer belt systems, with great success, and those things got used & abused.
