A Cold or Allergies?

My husband is all stuffed up and has a bit of a headache. When he blows his nose, it's clear. He says that his throar feels a bit scratchy and when he coughs, it sounds like that barking cough. He isn't running a fever so I am wondering is this could be more allergies or maybe a cold? I'm not sure how to tell the difference. Thanks to all who can help here.

Is he pron to having allergies this time of year?
The sore throat is probably from a post-nasal drip in the back of his throat. It is really hard to tell at times whether it is just allergies or a cold. The kicker for me is usually the headache and if it gets worse and starts turning into a sinus headache. Then I know something more is up than just allergies.

He does have allergies, but with the cold weather, I wouldn't think allergies would be a problem but the thing that throws me is that when he blows his nose, it's clear and I have always been told that when it's clear...it's allergies. You mentioned that when you get a sinus headache, you know it's more than allergies, isn't a sinus headache a part of allergies or am I'm thinking of something else? Thanks again!
