A car dealer took money from my checking account is this legal?

I signed the purchase order for a car at a dealer. Insurance was providing me with the down payment. The deal was practically done but the dealer sold the car I signed the purchase order for to another person. I decided to not buy a car from them because basically they did not take my business serious. I had provided them with the routing number and my account information to ensure that the car did not get sold, and anyways it did. Now 3 weeks after, they charged my account for the down payment and overdraft me for $6000. Now I am moneyless and the bank is telling me that it will take ten days for this to get resolved. I spoke to the dealer and they will not give me the money back until 3 days go ahead. Meanwhile i am moneyless and with a negative bank account. Some people are telling me to seek legal assistance because what the dealer did was not legal. Is that true? Was it illegal for the dealer to sell a car that I had already signed the purchased order for? And was it illegal for them to go ahead and cash the money without a title signed or anything?

Thank you
