A bill collector is disclosing my financial information to family?

I have about $5000 worth of debt. Mostly old credit cards and stupid junk I defaulted on in my younger days after a bad car accident. I've recently taken the first steps to repair my credit and have begun working with a financial adviser to help me do this the right way. One of the credit cards I owe has sent my account to a collection agency. A bill collector has been calling my family members and harassing them, telling them the exact amount of what I owe and pressuring them to make a payment. This is outrageous. I have called the guy and told him to NEVER contact my family again, and the calls haven't stopped. I'm honestly considering a lawsuit. Would a cease and desist letter stop this harassment? I'm pretty sure that what he's doing is illegal.
