...swimming towards it at 4 m/s? a 5 kg fish swimming at a speed of 1 m/s swallows an absent-minded 1 kg fish swimming towards it at 4 m/s. the speed of the larger fish after lunch is______ m/s

Take the direction in which the 5 kg fish is initially moving as positive.

Initially:-
Mass of the larger fish M1 = 5 kg
Velocity of the larger fish u1 = 1 m/s
Mass of the smaller fish M2 = 1 kg
Velocity of the smaller fish u2 = -4 m/s

Finally,
let the common speed of the two fish = v
By conservation of momentum,
(M1+M2)v = M1 u1 + M2 u2
(5+1)v = 5 * 1 + 1 * (-4)
6v = 1
v = 1/6 = 0.17 m/s
Ans: 0.17 m/s
