99 Suzuki RM250 Gas and Oil?

I just bought this bike. What octane of gas would you recommend? What type of oil and what ratio? I live at 5280ft. Will be using bike to fart around on at the dirt track, no racing. Thanx!

That's a pretty high elevation! If you bought that bike at another location (i.e. at a lower elevation) you'll likely have to adjust the carburetor; lean it out a little. Regular 87 octane should be fine. Normal two-stroke engine. Go to the store and look over the two-stroke oils, they'll give you a mixture ratio. Usually one small bottle for a gallon of gas. Try this ratio out, and see if you have a little blackish smoke from the exhaust at all rpm's. If not, try mixing a little richer. You don't want to starve the engine of oil. The oil in the gas is the only lubrication the engine gets. If it's a thick smoke (doesn't dissipate a foot or two from the exhaust) then lean it out with some straight gas. Depending on how worn the engine is will require some minor adjustment to the ratio. Enjoy!

Run regular gas. A good ashless 2-stroke oil at 32:1 is hard to beat. BelRay and Yamalube are brands I have had good results with. Rick Sieman at Off-road.com has recommended that mix for years, and it has always worked for me. The only time I use less oil is with my MZs, for which the manufacturer says only 50:1.
