99 model Mazda Metro 121 will not drive?

About six months ago my friend left me his car and I used it sometimes until about three months ago when I went abroad. I had been home a week and using the car when I noticed a significant drop in power to the drive whenever I put my foot down or the engine speed was slow. There had been a small issue since my friend had the car, where the car would jolt if you accelarated from a slow engine speed. I don't know if it's related but that seemed to be getting worse until today, when on the uphill drive home the engine kept dropping in speed and almost stalling in both 1st and 2nd gears. I barely made it home and found that even from a high engine speed it would die if I began engaging the clutch. Now from where it's parked I can't move it, because the engine splutters to a stop if I put the car into first gear, and even sometimes struggles to speed up or idle in neutral.
My first thoughts were that there was something wrong in the gearbox/clutch area. Now I'm wondering if it could be a blockage in the fuel line. Would that make sense if there was petrol sitting in the tank for almost three months? I've since refueled twice.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
