overall good shape, trans slips and whines, sometimes, i have been told by shops that changing fluid and filter could make it worse. they all say it needs to be rebuilt, for $2600-3000, without ever even seeing it. any tips or info would be much appreciated. thanks in advance

yup that dude is correct,. but thats what he charges, you might look around to see if you can get a cheaper price though, because that sounds rediculas, i would have assumed that it would be 800-1200 to fix somthing like that. it might be cheaper to get a new one from the junk yard(if any) or from a few auto stores.

That is correct. If you change the fluid and filter, you run the chance of destroying it. All the clean fluid will let clean the gunk out that is holding the clutches together.
The price to rebuild it seem a bit too high. Call other shops.
A transmission that slips is on it's last leg. A whine is not good at all.

this is a very common problem with those years...and for the cost of that rebuild, you could get two new used trannies...but i suggest looking around for a better deal on the rebuild, it should of been cheaper then that....
