99 ford explorer making creaking noises?

I bought a 99 ford explorer with 88,000 miles on it about six months ago. I had the brakes replaced and oil changed as soon as I got it and it has passed inspection...a couple months later it started to make a creaking noise when I hit bumps or turned the wheel. I live in texas and the weather had heated up and the noise went away completely. Now that its starting to get cold the noise has returned full force and gotten worse. I recently took it on a four hour trip (before the noise started again) and it worked perfectly. Now I'm needing to drive it for about an hours worth of a trip and I'm scared? I heard it could flip? The noise had gotten so bad I get laughs from friends and family. What I need to know is what could it be if it went away and then came back worse? And how much will this cost to fix?
 
it may be a bad tie rod but its most likely a bad ball joint. the factory ball joints don't have grease fitting so they cannot be greased at you oil change. a good aftermarket ball joint does have grease fittings. cost of repair can range from 200 to 1000 at most shops depends on if all four are bad or not. take to your local midas or car x and ask them for a free front end inspection, just let them know up front about the noise problem and that you only want the inspection at that time otherwise the may charge to look at all kinds of stuff. because nobody wants to waste time for free stuff..
