, and smell of gas"? i have bought this 98 honda prelude 7 days ago, problem is ive noticed a small patch of soot built up on my bumper above my tail pipe, asked questions about that, kept checking the ares out looking close to the pipe i noticed that its releasing some white smoke or maybe steam, i dont know really what to call it but its light and thin, the temp here is not cold so i beleave it isnt by weather. so next i realized a mistake thats been made, when i bought it i filled it up with regular unleded gas and today when i was getting it more fuel i noticed on the gas flap it requires premium unleded fuel. there was about 3/4 of a tank left so i went ahead and filled with premium.. but could that be the cause of these problems. yes or no please let me know as much of ideas that you think you can help me with , the exhaust is letting out a smell of fuel, the car itself is running good i didnt own it original so i cant compare it to new, but it seems pretty good. oh one other thing , the fluids in the car all seam to be full or up enough.. the oil is a little low but there is no gunk buildup on the dip stick nor is the oil extra thick and clumpy or anything .. its just a little low.

the grade of gasoline should not matter other than for fuel mileage i would say you got some burned valves mis seated valve guides or even piston rings has this car been tuned or tweaked maybe used for street racing?

all manufacturers recommend using premium unleaded fuel. from what you've described i think your car is burning oil check your oil dipstick level regularly and see if the level is going down over time. you may have long fuel injector on times, caused by a fualty 02 sensor, it will cause a car to run rich by turning the fuel injector on longer.
You should take the car to a shop and have it properly diagnosed if you can

Your car is burning both antifreeze (the cause of the white smoke) and oil. The cause is likely a bad head gasket. There could also be oil blow by the piston rings.

Burning higher octane in a car will only harm your wallet. Octane is only the resistance to burn. Lower octane many cause the gas to burn to early and cause knocking or exploding before the spark plug is supposed to ignite it.

Keep track of the oil and antifreeze consumption to refill it properly.

The fuel odor is probably a fuel leak that should be fixed. Gas is extremely explosive/flammable and the fumes are bad for you and can asphixiate you.
